THE PROJECT: Equine MRI Scanning building

When Liverpool University's department of Veterinary Medicine wanted to install a Hallmarq Equine MRI scanner Hallmarq chose J Davies Building as their preferred contractor to carry out the specialist refurbishment.

THE BREIF
The facility was to be installed in a Victorian stable block. It involved safely removing the old Asbestos roof and replacing it with a modern insulated one. A concrete floor with damp proof membrane - perfectly level -and free of all metal was laid, with a pit at its centre. The pit was to house a 1 ton magnet. A special "metal box" room was built around the pit insulating it from the outside world so no radio waves could penetrate. This room was to house the specialist MRI equipment. Air conditioning equipment that could maintain the temperature inside the box room to within +/- 2 degrees was incorporated into the system.
Finally a viewing room for vets and students to monitor the MRI scanning process was incorporated .

J Davies Building has already carried out the successful refurbishment of an old building at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, to house another Hallmarq Equine MRI Scanner.
